Also Called: Blackfin Shark, Blacktip Whaler, Grey Shark, Spotfin Ground Shark
One of the smaller sharks off the coast of Hilton Head Island, Blacktips are often a “gateway” shark for anglers looking to transition into heavier game. Blacktip sharks can be found in both nearshore and offshore waters.
Blacktip Sharks are one of the most exciting species anglers can target around Hilton Head because of their speed, power, and acrobatic fight. Known for explosive runs and high-energy action once hooked, Blacktip Sharks deliver a memorable experience that stands out on any offshore or nearshore fishing trip. Their aggressive feeding behavior and strong pull make them a favorite among anglers looking for a thrilling challenge on the water.
Another reason anglers love catching Blacktip Sharks is the fast-paced action they can provide when conditions are right. These sharks often patrol coastal waters in search of baitfish, creating exciting opportunities for anglers targeting active predators. Their willingness to strike and their reputation for hard-fighting performance make Blacktip Sharks an unforgettable catch for both experienced fishermen and adventurous first-time anglers visiting Hilton Head.
Blacktip Sharks also add variety and excitement to local fishing charters by offering a completely different kind of battle compared to many inshore species. Their speed, stamina, and unpredictable movements keep anglers engaged from the moment the line comes tight. For those seeking a powerful saltwater fish that delivers adrenaline-pumping action, Blacktip Sharks are one of the most talked-about species found in the waters around Hilton Head.
Blacktip sharks are most abundant nearshore from April through September, when there is less rainfall and salinity (amount of salt in the water) is highest. They can be found offshore, where salinity is less affected by rainfall, year-round.
Blacktip sharks can be found near the surface of both inshore and offshore waters, wherever they hunt for Shrimp, mackerel and other common prey.
Bait: Appeal to the Blacktip’s keen sense of smell with oily, smelly fish, such as mackerel (which you will want to catch fresh). Approach: The easiest way to attract Blacktip sharks is by first chumming - throwing fish parts, or “chum,” into the water. A small amount is often all you need inshore. Offshore, where they are more spread out, it takes more chum to draw them in. Tackle: You can catch Blacktip sharks with relatively light tackle, compared with heavy-duty gear needed for larger sharks. A size 8000 spinning reel and 7- or 8-ft. rod is sufficient. For Blacktip shark fishing your best bet is to set multiple rods.
